Cooking
- Iron Fish (Amazon Link) - You can start putting an Iron Fish when you are cooking your food to fortify your food with iron. Works really well if you are cooking a dish which has tomatoes or anything acidic
- Use Cast Iron Utensils for cooking (Amazon Link for a Cast Iron Skillet. Lodge store is a well known brand). These utensils are generally not very expensive.
Iron Infusions
- If oral Iron supplementation has not been working for an extended period of time, get a referral from your PCP to a Hematologist (your PCP “should” do this). Sometimes your PCP might directly refer you to an infusion lab as well.
- There is some risk in getting Iron Infusions as seem people have anaphylactic reaction but they test with a small dose before giving you the full infusion. There is less chance of reaction from the newer iron infusion formulas which are generally well tolerated.
Blood Tests (to find root cause)
- Iron Panel - Iron levels, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and Ferritin
- Celiac Panel - To detect gut inflammation which results in malabsorption of nutrients including iron. A celiac panel involves blood tests for antibodies like tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA, endomysial antibody (EMA) IgA, and deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgA/IgG to detect an immune response to gluten, which can indicate celiac disease.
